Is an ERP enough to help plan your inventory?

Inventory Planning calls for having adequate storage space.

The kind of improvement I would have liked to see in the inventory after implementing ERP – we have not. But that is not related to the installation of InstaNAV nor is it a limitation of the system; it is more related to our internal processes which are not mature enough to take advantage of it. To maintain proper inventory, we need a bigger space; we need to absolutely double our storage space so that we can bin everything and put the bin numbers in the software. So that process is still on.



What we are using right now is to check what is in stock and whether to order or not to order depending on the stock. However, there is still a lag because sometimes the system might show that a particular item is available in stock but when physically checked it may not be the case. There is because of improper warehouse management – attributable to shortage of storage space.

I should have understood the need for a bigger store. Till now, since it was being done manually, we just labeled the material somewhere and when the product was required, people would just go ahead and search for it while nobody actually knew whether the material is actually in stock or not. We were able to see that this is a corner. I think the very fact that it has highlighted that our store is a problem is a result of InstaNAV. It was there at the back of our mind but we actually didn’t pursue it aggressively. Now that it has come in to focus that this needs to be done and we are losing money due to this – we are working on changing it.
